Anemia

What is Anaemia?

The word 'anemia' actually comes from the word 'mia', i.e. blood. Anaemia means absence of blood and refers to the reduction of haemoglobin level in the body. Normal Hemoglobin level in adult females is 12-16 g/dl, whereas in adult males, it is 14 to 18 gm/dl. When the haemoglobin level falls below the minimum parameter, anaemia ensues. ‘Ayurvedic Treatment for Anemia’ begins with identifying the root cause of every individual patient.

Types of Anemia

Anemia comes in various forms, each with its own causes. Here are some of the most common types:

Iron Deficiency Anemia :

The most common type of anemia is caused by a shortage of iron in the body. Your bone marrow needs iron to make haemoglobin.

Vitamin Deficiency Anemia :

Apart from iron, your body requires folate and vitamin B-12 to generate a normal number of red cells in your body. A diet devoid of these and other vital nutrients can lead to low production of red blood cells.

Aplastic Anemia :

This is the type of anemia that is very rare and can be fatal. It occurs when the body does not produce enough red blood cells. Its causes include infections, drug side effects, autoimmune diseases, and exposure to chemicals.

Hemolytic Anemias :

This is when the number of red body cells is lost at a greater rate than that of the production of bone marrow in the compensation. There are some blood disorders that magnify the loss of red body cells in lieu of their synthesis.

Sickle Cell Anemia :

A defect that is inherited and present from birth. Such individuals have an atypical form of haemoglobin which can rupture the red blood cells into a sickle cell.

Anaemia Symptoms

  • Fatigue
  • Pale or yellowish skin
  • Irregular heartbeats
  • Shortness of breath

Anemia Causes

Anemia is also known as “Pandu Roga” in Ayurveda. Just like all other diseases in Ayurveda, which start from the imbalance of doshas, Anemia is also believed to be caused by doshic imbalance, especially Pitta Dosha or deficiencies in vital energies. Take a look at diverse contributors to anemia as per Ayurveda:

  • Dietary Factors:  Poor nutrition leads to deficiencies in vital minerals and vitamins necessary for blood production.
  • Digestive Issues:  Weak digestion causes poor nutrient assimilation and toxic buildup (Ama) that obstructs circulatory channels. Piles or con
  • Physical and Emotional Stress:  Excessive exertion and stress disrupt Dosha balance, especially Pitta, which results in anemia.
  • Chronic Conditions:  Chronic illnesses that cause inflammation or bleeding, such as ulcers or haemorrhoids, can lead to blood loss and anemia.
  • Liver Function: Impaired liver function can affect blood synthesis and its overall regulation.
  • Lifestyle Choices: Sedentary habits and improper sleep patterns further aggravate Dosha imbalances.

Risks & Complications

Anemia can result in a number of health challenges, like high levels of fatigue, pregnancy-related problems, heart problems and developmental issues in children if it is left untreated.

When to See a Doctor?

It is important to consult a certified Ayurveda doctor for Anemia if you feel the above signs and symptoms sound like you. A basic blood examination would rule out the problem for you. Timely Anemia treatment, especially in Ayurveda is crucial to manage the symptoms effectively and mitigate potential complications.

Ayurveda addresses anemia not just by treating the symptoms but by examining the root cause of the imbalance in body energies. The treatment involves a combination of herbal medicine, diet recommendations, and lifestyle changes.

Herbal Remedies:

Herbs like Ashwagandha, Shatavari, and Triphala are well known for their ability to improve quality and quantity of the blood, aid digestion, and remove waste.
